2007 DISTRICT QUALIFYING EVENT BULLETIN

In order to qualify for the State Dance/Drill Championship held on March 23rd and 24th, qualified dance/drill teams must attend a district qualifying event. WIAA District Four’s Dance/Drill qualifying event will be held at Heritage High School on Saturday, March 10th, 2007.

 

The Team Registration & Confirmation form (enclosed) should be mailed and/or emailed with your Team Roster. All district qualifying tournaments will follow the format used by local competitions developed by WSDDCA (Washington State Dance/Drill Coaches Association), WSSJA (Washington State Spirit Judges Association), and the WIAA regulations “Bound for State”, which can be found at www.WIAA.com.

 

QUALIFICATION:

 

·         Team must have performed in at least five (5) school events.

·         The team must have participated in at least two (2) school sponsored competitions in each of the categories in which they wish to compete at the district event and at the state event.  The team must have scored at least a 195 minimum qualifying score (whole numbers only; there will be no rounding of decimals) after all deductions (based upon the cumulative scores awarded by three (3) judges) in the category in which the team will compete at the state event in at least one (1) of the competitions.  (Please note change in bold)

 

The Registration & Confirmation form is due Monday, February 19th for planning purposes.  The last competition to qualify is scheduled for February 24, 2007.  Teams who are not qualified and hope to be by February 24, 2007, should mail or email form with team roster by February 19th and send a written qualification notice to the tournament director no later than Monday, February 26th.

 

NOTE:  Please list email address on registration form.  All communication from tournament director will be done via email.

 

EVENT FORMAT:

 

·         Teams will be randomly selected for performance times. An order of performance will be emailed to participating teams approximately one week before tournament.

·         Teams may arrive at 9:00am, with floor times starting at 10:00am. 

·         Each team will be given 5 minutes floor time per routine.  Floor times will be assigned and sent along with the order of performance. Due to travel, if you request a specific floor time, all effort will be made to accommodate your team.

·         Schedule for the tournament:

9:00am   Teams Arrive (entrance doors will be marked)

10:00am   Floor Times Begin

11:30am  Judges Arrive

12:30pm  Doors open for spectators to enter gym

12:30pm  Coaches Meeting

1:00pm    Competition Begins

Approximately 5:00pm – Drill Down followed by Awards

 

Please note:  The competition will begin precisely at 1pm.  Please ask family/friends to arrive early if they don’t want to miss any part of the competition in order to be respectful of judges and other officials’ time.

 

CATEGORIES:

 

·         All six categories of Drill, Dance, Kick, Pom, Color Guard/Prop/Production, and Hip Hop Dance.  Color Guard/Prop/Production teams must indicate which sub-category within that category they wish to be judged in.  Please note category definitions posted on the WIAA website.

·         Schools may enter in a maximum of three (3) categories.

 

 

SCORING AND JUDGING:

 

·         Score sheet used for all competitions is based on 30 points for Execution, 30 points for Content/Choreography, and 40 points for Overall Effect for a maximum of 100 points from each judge.

·         Festival judging will be used which consist of three (3) judges on each side and two (2) technical judges for a total of eight (8) judges.

·         All questions prior to tournament about safety issues or National Federation Spirit Rule book concerns need to be addressed by Cara Heiner at cbheiner@gmail.com.  Questions or videotapes must be emailed or sent to her two weeks prior to district event.  Please contact her prior to mailing any videotapes to receive her mailing address.

·         Routines will be scored the sum of the three (3) judges using the linear scale:

 

90–100% (270-300 points) will receive a Superior Rating

70-89.9% (210-269.9 points) will receive an Excellent Rating

50-69.9%(150-209.9 points) will receive an Outstanding Rating

 0-49.9% (0-149.9 points) will receive a Good Rating

 

·         Teams receiving a score of 210 or higher after deductions from three (3) WSSJA judges in the category or categories in which the team competes will qualify for the Washington State Dance/Drill event.

·         The length of all routines will be 2-3 minutes (prop/production category routine length is 2-4 minutes).  Teams are allowed an additional one (1) minute to enter and one (1) minute to exit the performance area.  Color Guard/Flag and/or Prop/Production teams can have three (3) minutes to set up and three (3) minutes to remove props if necessary.

·         The performance area is the basketball court with no boundary lines.

·         Entrances and exits to and from the performance floor will not be judged by performance judges, but will be judged by safety/technical judges.  Performance judges will keep judging until it is clear that the routine has ended, with or without music.

·         It is important to follow schedule for on deck, on floor, etc.  Teams should not enter the floor for performance until the announcer calls for the team.  Then script from “WIAA Bound for State” is used for all competitions (section 5.8).

·         No provisions will be made for special effects.  Use of fire, smoke and helium balloons or routines with gym lights out will not be allowed in competition.  Any violation of these rules will result in disqualification.

·         Teams must enter and exit at designated doors.  A map of school and gym will be emailed to qualifying teams prior to the competition.

 

 

 

 

 

MUSIC:

 

·         All music must be recorded at the beginning of a new compact disc (CD).  It is recommended to have two new CD’s in case of an accident.  Tape player will be available for back up purposes only.

·         Music must be appropriate.  Coaches must have their music cleared by their Athletic Directors.  A 25 point sportsmanship violation deduction will occur if musing contains inappropriate language or lyrics.  Please refer to music guidelines provided by WIAA, WSSJA and WSDDCA.

·         Floor time is a five (5) minute practice used for each routine.  A music sound check should be done at this time.

 

AWARDS:

 

Team Trophy:  Trophies will be awarded depending on how many teams compete in one category.  Some categories may be combined.

Drill Down:  Due to changes in the bound for state regulations, drill down will be different this year.  Two drill down competitions will occur.  All 4A team members will compete together for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place pins.  The last 16 individuals standing during this competition will qualify for state drill downs.  Then all 3A/2A/1A/B team members will compete together for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place pins.  The last 27 individuals standing in this competition will qualify for state drill downs

 

Trophies will be grouped by category and not by school classification.  [NOTE:  At the state championship all 4A schools will compete for awards on Saturday, March 24th, 2007 and all B, 1A, 2A, and 3A schools will compete for awards on Friday, March 23rd 2007.]

 

SEATING:

 

·         Designated areas for teams, parents, and spectators will be marked with a school sign for each school per local competition tradition, provided by the tournament management.

 

WARM UP AND LOCKER ROOMS:

 

·         Areas/rooms will be available for changing clothes and applying make-up.

·         Teams who have male members will have a boys room available for changing.

·         Teams are expected to keep valuable belongings with them in the stands as with the WIAA state and most local competitions, unless a secure area is designated.

·         A Warm Up area will be available for teams before they enter the on deck position during the competition.

 

ADMISSION PRICES AND PASS POLICY:

 

·         Admission prices will be $7 adults, $4 students with ASB Card, $7 students without ASB Card, $4 for children 12 and under and Senior Citizens (62 and over).

·         Tournament managers will use a gate list for participating school team members, coaches, and managers/chaperones.

·         A pass list will be used to admit competing school supervisors unless supervisory passes are printed and distributed by the tournament manager.  Schools are to notify the tournament manager prior to the tournament as to who will be assigned supervisory duties.  The gate list should also include the names of the superintendents and members of the school board of Directors as requested by the participating school.
